Major races include Humans, Elves, Dwarves, Urgals, and Dragons, although the Dragons are on the verge of extinction. There are also a number of creatures whose origins are hidden and are not understood, such as the Ra'zac. Apart from the different kind of beings found in Alagaësía, there are also societies that have existed or do exist that deserve recognition, such as the Varden, the Dragon Riders, and the Forsworn.
Professional sources decrying the book's derivations from Tolkien among others include USAToday, stating that the book "echoes Tolkien in its pseudo-Celtic language and imagined universe of dwarfs and elves",[1] while Entertainment Weekly also cites a specific trope from Tolkien, "the ageless elves speak wisdom".[2]
Kirkus's review of Eldest, notes that it is "suffused with purple prose and faux-archaic language," and is a "patchwork of dialogue, characters and concepts pulled whole cloth from the fantasy canon", but overall the review was positive.
